Hi Richard,

Congratulations on the message. Your voice has changed a bit since 2001;).

Concerning the term only begotten, It seems to me that is is sometimes mentioned in regard to discussions with Latter-Day Saints and Jehovah's Witnesses. The term first-born is also at times discussed with Jehovah's Witnesses. According to the late Walter Martin, The word “firstborn” refers not to the first one created or born, but to the one who has the preeminence or the right to rule as an heir has the right to rule over his predecessor’s estate. http://www.waltermartin.org/jehwit.html

In his book written for discussion with the Watchtower, Robert Bowman states that the Greek word for only begotten, monogenes, does include the idea of begetting, and therefore Jesus was begotten from the Father. p.81. Bowman also concludes that the term monogenes indicates that Christ was unique as God's Son. p.85.

Bowman, Robert, (1990) Why You Should Believe in The Trinity, Grand Rapids, Baker Books.

E.F. Harrison also mentions that the term only-begotten conveys the idea of uniqueness and consubstantiality (substance/nature) with the Father. p.799.

Harrison, E.F. (1996) 'Only Begotten', in Walter A. Elwell (ed.), Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, Grand Rapids, Baker Books.

Hi Richard,

Sattvicwarrior seemingly just wanted to "throw rocks" at me rather than discuss my blog or Christianity in a rational manner, as can be seen from the related post and comments. There are several bloggers out there that oppose Christianity and we need to pray for these people in humility of course, even when they don't respect us much. This is not easy, as you know;). I had another non-Christian comment as well in the same week, but she was pleasant.
