Scots confession- Chapter One

Chapter 1

Of God

We confess and acknowledge one only God, to whom only we must cleave, whom only we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom only we must put our trust: who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible; one in substance, and yet distinct in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; by whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and in earth, as well visible as invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable Providence, to such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice has appointed them, to the manifestation of his own glory.

We confess and acknowledge one only God The act of faith is never and purely individual act it must be an act of the whole church. Claiming universal validity. But the importance lies not in the act of the church but to whom they confess and acknowledge the one God. The one that must be the centre of our lives and thus must be in no way pushed aside.

who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible; one in substance, and yet distinct in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost;
Much as I like the confession it is rather strange that love is not explicitly mentioned in the confession of the definition of God. But that aside, the Scots confession, as opposed to the Westminster, is certainly more true to the biblical witness by placing the Trinity in the very definition of who God is rather than an addition. God is fundamentaly Trinity.

God's eternity, infinity, immeasurableness, incomprehensibleness, ominpotence and invinsibility. Must, however, preface the Trinity. Not because they are more fundamental rather they guard against the temptation to place God within the confines of our human understanding. God stands 'wholly other', in calling God Trinity we can only speak in untruth.

by whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and in earth, as well visible as invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable Providence, to such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice has appointed them, to the manifestation of his own glory.

God created this world, he is good it therefore must be good. He preserves it, he is not deist God. The world comes from God but more than that it is for God's glory. This strikes at the root of all sinful human pride. We are not the centre of the universe, not even our own universe, it is made for God and his glory. Praise can only be the correct response.
