The evangelical or the Evangelical

Had a intresting weekend, went to a popular christian group and did some training. Got talking to some of the others on training. I mentioned that I thought N. T. Wright was a top scholar. This led to Steve Chalke(N. T having done the forword) and his disavoul penal substitution. I said that I did not think that it was the worst thing ever.

They then said that the wrath of God must be delt with on the cross. The discussion escilated, I argued and argued. they argued and argued. They then claimed that I was not an Evangelical and should not be there.

Well, it could have been worse ... they could have said you weren't a Christian and shouldn't be there.

All you have to do is find ONE evangelical scholar past or present who prefers a broader model of substitution over the penal one and you're vindicated.

Also I can't think of one incidence in the Gospels where Jesus indicates that his death has anything to do with satisfying God's wrath whatsoever. I can't think of any in Paul either, but that's probably due to my ignorance.

Have you had a chat with Dr Rainey about this?
